Jehovah Jireh (yeh-ho-vaw’ yir-eh’) :: The Lord Will Provide
Jehovah Jireh occurs only once in the Bible. We see it in the story of Abraham as he embarks up a mountainside in obedience to God to sacrifice his son, Issac, the promised miracle to Abraham and Sarah.
As Abraham is ready to complete his obedience to God, an angel of the Lord stops him and Abraham sees a ram caught by his horns in the thicket.
Abraham took the ram and used it as a sacrifice to the Lord and then says:
“Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, ‘In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.’” Genesis 22:14 NASB95
In Hebrew, the root words for Jehovah Jireh are Yᵊhōvâ rā’â, which means Jehovah will see (to it). Jehovah-Jireh is a symbolic name Abraham uses to memorialize the intercession of God by providing a substitute for the sacrifice of Issac.
If you have never read the story of Abraham and Issac’s journey up the mountain, I encourage you to read Genesis 22.
