Adonai is used by many throughout Scripture to show reverence to God and acknowledges the nature of their relationship where they are willingly a servant to the Lord and recipient of God’s provision for protection, guidance, and care for His people.

The name Yahweh is considered so sacred, Hebrew scholars refused to speak or write it. Instead, they would often only write the consonants for Yahweh, as YHWH, and use the word Adonai, meaning Lord, when speaking.
