So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV
Verse Mapping
Wasting – loss of strength, gradually reduce fullness
Waste – loss of value, barren, breaking down, wear away
Renew(ed) -to make fresh or strong again; to promise again; RESTORE
Outer self – physical body
Inner self – spirit, that which lives forever
Day by day – daily portion (“His mercies (compassion) are new every morning) Lamentations 3:23), only what I need for today; no waste, no leftovers; a perfect portion (Jesus -*cross references)
Reflect
To ensure we do not get discouraged when we can no longer accomplish in our own strength, God restores our spirit with Himself, our daily portion, exactly what we need to fulfill today. There is no need for seconds, there are no leftovers; He is exactly what we need for today. (based on 2 Corinthians 4:16)
God renews our spirit each and everyday because He gives us the exact portion of what we need for that day; no more, no less. His portion is perfectly measured – filled to the top, leveled and even, the exact amount needed – for every thing we need for today. Each day is unique, with it’s own rare challenges, and He gives us the portion we need for our assigned undertaking for each specific day. Custom made, tailored just for me. When I come to the end of me, Jesus is there, cup filled to the brim, waiting to give all of Himself.
Relate
This verse speaks so much about the renewing of our spirit when our flesh fails and we can no longer (and should not ever) operate in our own strength. Yet, in this season of life, I find these words echoing in the quiet places of my heart:
“Do not worry when you see the results of time passing in the body and mind of those you love. You were not made for here, anyway. Your home is in Heaven and your inner self – your spirit – is being stored in relation to Me everyday.
I pour Myself out daily and grow your spirit to become more like Me. And when your body looses it’s grasp on this world, your spirit will take hold of the eternal life you were created for. Do not be discouraged, this is your ultimate hope.”
– God
Pray
Jesus, how much I need You. I need You every day, but at times I need You every minute. Thank You for the hope You freely pour out, making me more and more like You. Giving me peace to know this world is not my home; I am but passing through for a brief moment. Help me to turn to You to receive Your portion for me each day, humbling myself to let You take control so I don’t do anything within my own strength. Thank You, Lord, for Your encouragement to my weary heart. In Jesus’ Name – Amen
